ANAK
NG BULKAN
THE AWAITED HI-TECH FILM OF THE YEAR
The biggest film of
PREMIERE ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCTIONS
for this year is ANAK
NG BULKAN, directed by no less than the
top man of Premiere himself, MR. CIRIO
H. SANTIAGO. More of
an update than a remake of the
original 1959 film (directed by Mr. Emmanuel Rojas), ANAK
NG BULKAN centers
on the friendship of Pedring and the gigantic bird from the
folk tales of the Pinatubo Aetas. Played by
TOM TAUS JR., Pedring faces
life's difficulties and triumphs with the help of this legendary creature
on his side.
PREMIERE is daring to cross the visual effects
waters of the Philippine cinema with the making of this film, Aided
by numerous visual effects experts,
the BULKAN
bird was able to come
alive via different techniques.
The very basic gadgets
of animatronics help give life
to the small and the young version of the bird.
Puppetry was also used in some sequences of the film.
As for the full-grown bird, a big model -- bigger than the popular Volkswagen
beetle car -- was made. The small scale models were photographed
against a blue screen for the digital compositing. Computer generated
images or CGI also help in the visual storytelling of the film,
bringing to life the bird BULKAN
as he flies around. Effects of this
kind were made courtesy of POSTGRAFIX,
the sister company of Premiere which specializes in postproduction services.
Visual effects supervisor GERARDO CHUIDIAN
heads the team of creative digital artists who strive to make the effects
realistic as possible.
Mechanical effects were also done
for BULKAN.
Miniatures were called for when Mr. Santiago wanted to recreate the Pinatubo
explosion and the onslaught of lahar. Mr. Santiago wanted authenticity
when it comes to these recreations, for the film is set in 1991 when Mount
Pinatubo unfurled its rage over the whole world.
According to Mr. Chuidian, the best
visual effects work is done when the effects are not noticeable.
In other words, all these effects should be seamless and therefore doesn't
call attention to itself. It should help propel the story in its
natural development.
With all this technology
possible, Mr. Santiago doesn't want
to lose sight of what's important in
this film -- the story. According to him,
this is an endearing tale of a boy
and a bird's friendship. That is what
important in the film -- to be
able to show this friendship in order to
entertain both the young and old alike. With all the
technical aspects of the BULKAN,
the story is not overshadowed. The audience can expect a well-told
story spiced with these hi-tech dazzling visual effects, giving ANAK
NG BULKAN a world class touch.
